The Council of the Faculty of Agriculture brought the Decision No. 269-2 / 2/03 on 21st of April, 2003 on the establishment of the Institute of Animal Husbandry, as a research and development institute of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Banja Luka. By the Decision of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Srpska, No. 06 / 6-61-366 / 04 of 19th of Nov., 2004, the Institute was entered in the register of scientific research institutions with the Ministry of Science and Technology under the order No. 6.
Institute of Animal Science of the Faculty of Agriculture, University in Banja Luka conducts scientific research activities and expertise in the field of animal production and dairy, i.e.: cattle breeding, sheep breeding, goat breeding, horse breeding, pig breeding, poultry, marine and freshwater aquaculture and fisheries, beekeeping, fodder and domestic animals food, biotechnology in animal production, selection and breeding of farmed animals, manufacture and control of animal origin products, according to the registered activities of the University of Banja Luka and the Faculty.
Institute of Animal Husbandry of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Banja Luka performs and provides professional services through:
One of the activities of the Institute of Animal Husbandry is transfer of scientific achievements in the field of animal husbandry to manufacturers and their application in practice, directly in cooperation with farmers and other institutions in the field of agriculture.
One of the tasks is to raise the level of knowledge of farmers about the importance of production of healthy and safe food for the animals, the importance of proper nutrition and quality feed, breeding of domestic animals, with the purpose of obtaining quantitatively and qualitatively better products of animal origin intended for human consumption.
The Institute of animal science develops business plans, provides experts’ opinions, professional advices, knowledge, instruction and practical skills transferring those to farmers. It participates in collecting and processing of data in the field of animal husbandry. The Institute offers designing and preparation of studies, plans and practical solutions in the field of production of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horse-breeding, fishing, beekeeping and others.
The Institute has the equipment to monitor microclimate parameters in buildings for breeding of animals. Based on the observed parameters we offer recommendations in order to create a favorable microclimate in animal housing, and consequently achieve better production results and health status of farmed animals.
Laboratory for quality control of animal feed is capable of testing the chemical composition and nutritional value of livestock feed and the finished concentrated mixtures. All analyses of animal feed are performed by classical chemical analysis (Weende method).
In the laboratory for quality control of animal feed, we perform the following analyses of chemical composition of the food: moisture, ether extract (crude fat), fiber (raw cellulose), crude protein, non-nitro extractive matter (BEM) and ash.
In the laboratory for aquaculture we provide services for investigation of effects of food of different composition to the ratio of conversion and growth characteristics of cultivated fish of different age groups (from hatching to market size).
The objective is to transfer scientific and professional knowledge into practice i.e. theoretical and applied scientific and technical knowledge in beekeeping at the experimental apiary of Faculty of
Agriculture, to be at disposal of both students (teaching), and beekeepers (practitioners) for their needs.
Linking with producers of fruits, vegetables, industrial and medicinal plants in the city of Banja Luka and the possibility of pollination service of plant species is an important service we offer.
Laboratory for animal feed quality control was founded in 2010.
The laboratory is capable of checking the chemical composition and nutritional value of livestock feed and finished concentrated mixtures. All analyses of animal feed are performed by classical chemical analysis (Weende method). The Decision on Fulfillment of Conditions for Work of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management No. 09-335-20361 / 10 was brought on 25th of Nov., 2010.
In addition to chemical analysis of animal feed, the Laboratory for quality control of animal feed provides good conditions for exercises in the field of animal nutrition and production and processing of milk, for students of I and II cycle studies – program of Animal Production at the Faculty of Agriculture. Also, this laboratory is the place where a significant number of researches and testing is performed as part of preparation of final graduate works, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations at the Faculty of Agriculture and other faculties of the University in Banja Luka, as well as a number of scientific research projects funded by the Government of the Republic of Srpska and international scientific institutions.

Laboratory for aquaculture was established in 2012.
Research program of the laboratory for aquaculture includes: testing of water quality and its impact on farmed fish species; testing of the quality of food for fish and growth characteristics of cultivated species of fish of different age categories; selection of rainbow trout, establishing aquaponic system and other systems of cultivation. Laboratory for aquaculture is equipped with a water supply system for flow-through aquariums and tanks of different volumes for different species of fish, devices for analyses and monitoring of water quality in aquariums and experimental tanks, the equipment for marking fish with passive integrated chips and other accessories. Laboratory research includes: research on the embryonic period (from fertilization to hatching) and post-embryonic development of units to consummation size of different species of fish; influence of temperature, oxygen content and other substances in the water to the usability of the feed; feed conversion ratio and analysis of fish growth characteristics; analysis of impact of different chemicals on fish (toxicity tests); research in terms of the use of nanomaterials in maintaining the quality of the breeding environment; sample preparation for different types of analyses (histological, etc.).

The apiary was built in 2007.
The main research activity of the experimental apiary is the formation of gene bank of tested queen bees from breeding centers throughout BiH, of domestic Carniolan indigenous breed honeybee, as well as a research for and application of new beekeeping techniques. As for research techniques, we use morphometric methods, calculation of bees cubital index, discoidal shift, dumb-bell index, their mutual correlation, determining the bee abdomen rings color, tongue length, as well as research of biological properties of Carniolan bees, using new techniques of beekeeping.
In laboratory controlled conditions, we carry out research in the field of adequate nutrition of bees using solid and liquid food for bees, depending on the season.
So far, the experimental apiary was used for experimental work in preparation of number of final papers and master works.
